DUBLIN, ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL: Overwhelmingly Catholic Dublin has two Protestant cathedrals, the most famous of which is St. Patricks, where we headed to hear the choir perform Friday Evensong (hence the dusky lighting in this picture). The building originated in the 12th or 13th century as a Catholic church, of course; but the fanatically Protestant Cromwell desecrated it by stabling his horses in it, and it was later appropriated for Protestant services, and so it remains, like many of Ireland's churches.
