NARA: May 23: We took a very long bus ride from the city center to the grounds of the Horyuji Temple, a large complex of shrines and other buildings. There is some dispute about how much remains of the original 7th century construction, but much of it is very old. Some of them are among the world’s oldest surviving wooden structures. This is the view from the gateway toward the Kondo (main hall—6th-8th C.).
