MIYAJIMA: The tide was out and deer were grazing where water normally surrounds the Itsukushima Shrine, which is actually an old palace containing a famous Noh stage. The first palace on this site was built in the latter half of the 6th century, but the current buildings date from 1168. Note the lights in the stone lantern. It was getting late, and they came on as we were walking by. One old man was out clam-digging in the flats.
