KONYA: That night we returned to the Museum grounds and joined an audience of maybe two hundred people, mostly composed of local Sufis, but with a healthy sprinkling of other tourists..An orchestra and chorus in traditional garb performed, then the dervishes paced out gravely in long black cloaks and began the ceremony, which is not simply wild, uncontrolled whirling, but a very measured, quite beautiful succession of movements. At a certain point, their outer cloaks laid aside, the dervishes begin to spin ecstatically, seeking union with God.
